Attachment-based family therapy (ABFT) is a therapeutic approach that aims to strengthen the connections between family members, especially between parents and children. The primary focus of this therapy is to help families understand the negative patterns of interaction that are negatively influencing relationships. Moreover, it promotes emotional engagement to restore positive connections and improve the mental health and well-being of every family member. Attachment theory and family systems theory are two streams from which ABFT borrow to create a therapeutic environment that aids in the healthy development of the family unit and the individuals within.
