Epithelial tissue is one of the four main types of animal tissues, characterized by its tightly packed cells that form a protective covering or lining in the body. Found on the surfaces of organs, glands, and cavities, epithelial tissue serves various functions such as protection against physical damage, absorption and secretion of substances, and selective permeability. The cells are closely joined together, forming a continuous sheet without any blood vessels within it. However, it can be avascular or vascularized, depending on its location and function. The different types of epithelial tissue include simple epithelium (single layer of cells), stratified epithelium (multiple layers), squamous epithelium (flat and thin cells), cuboidal epithelium (cube-shaped cells), and columnar epithelium (tall, elongated cells).
