What is article 370 and 35A?
Article 370 of the Indian constitution grants a special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir, allowing it to have its own constitution and flag. Article 35A is a provision within Article 370 that empowers the state legislature to define permanent residents of the state and provide them with special rights and privileges, including the right to own land and avail of government jobs. These articles have been hotly debated and criticized by those who believe they have hindered the integration of the region with the rest of India. In August 2019, the Indian government announced the abrogation of these articles, thereby stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its special status and bringing it under direct central rule.
