What is critical discourse analysis?

Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is an interdisciplinary approach that investigates language as a social practice and examines how power, ideology, and social inequality are reflected and reproduced through discourse. It aims to unveil the hidden ideological messages and power relations that exist in different forms of communication such as media texts, political speeches, advertisements, and everyday conversations. CDA focuses on the ways language is used to construct meaning, shape social identities, maintain or challenge social structures, and legitimize or contest dominant ideologies. By analyzing language patterns, discursive strategies, and underlying ideologies, CDA helps to reveal and challenge the oppressive or discriminatory aspects of discourse, promoting social change and justice.
