What are the causes of intellectual disability?

Intellectual disability refers to a condition characterized by significant limitations in intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior. While the exact causes can vary, there are several key factors that can contribute to intellectual disability. Genetic conditions such as Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, and fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome can lead to intellectual disabilities. Similarly, prenatal factors like exposure to certain infections or toxins during pregnancy, alcohol or drug use, and maternal malnutrition can also play a role. Some cases of intellectual disability may be the result of birth complications, premature birth, or serious illnesses during infancy or childhood. Additionally, environmental factors such as poor nutrition, exposure to lead, and neglect or abuse can also contribute to intellectual disability. It is important to note that in many cases, the specific cause of intellectual disability may not be fully understood, making early intervention and support crucial for individuals with the condition.
