What is the offside rule in football?

In football, the offside rule is a regulation that prohibits players from positioning themselves in the opposition's half of the field, behind the last defensive player (excluding the goalkeeper), at the moment the ball is played to them. If a player receives a pass while in an offside position, they will be penalized with an offside call, resulting in a free kick for the defending team. The offside rule is designed to prevent goal-hanging and ensure a fair competition where attackers have to beat the defenders to create scoring opportunities.
