What are TRP channels?

Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are a group of ion channels which are found in cell membranes of many different organisms. These channels are involved in a wide variety of physiological processes, including the sensation of pain, temperature, and taste, as well as regulation of blood pressure and insulin secretion. TRP channels are activated by a variety of stimuli including temperature, voltage, chemical agonists, and mechanical stress. Dysfunction in TRP channels has been linked to various disease states, including neuropathic pain, migraine headaches, and cystic fibrosis.
