What causes earthquakes?

Earthquakes are caused by the movement and shifting of tectonic plates beneath the Earth's surface. These plates can collide with one another, slide past each other or move apart, creating stress and tension within the Earth's crust. When this stress builds up to a critical point, it is released in the form of an earthquake, which can range in size and severity. Other factors, such as volcanic activity and human-induced causes like fracking, can also contribute to earthquakes.
