What is the neurohypophysis?

The neurohypophysis is an extension of the nervous system in the brain that regulates the release of hormones produced by the hypothalamus. It is also known as the posterior or pars nervosa of the pituitary gland. The neurohypophysis is made up of nerve fibers and specialized cells called pituicytes. It is responsible for the release of two important hormones: antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and oxytocin. ADH helps regulate water balance in the body while oxytocin plays a role in reproductive functions such as childbirth and lactation. Dysfunction of the neurohypophysis can lead to hormonal imbalances and various health problems.
