What causes dental caries?

Dental caries, commonly known as tooth decay or cavities, is primarily caused by a combination of factors, including poor oral hygiene, dietary choices, and the presence of bacteria in the mouth. When we consume sugary or acidic foods and beverages, such as candy, soda, or cakes, the bacteria in our mouth feed on the carbohydrates and produce acids. These acids, along with plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, gradually erode the tooth enamel, leading to dental caries. Additionally, inadequate oral hygiene practices, including irregular brushing and flossing, allow plaque to accumulate and further contribute to tooth decay. Therefore, maintaining good oral hygiene and adopting a balanced diet low in sugars and acids are essential in preventing dental caries.
