What is Blockbildung?

Blockbildung is a term in German politics which refers to the formation of political blocs or groups in parliament. It occurs when parties with similar ideologies or policies come together to form a coalition in order to consolidate power and influence decisions. This type of partnership is often formed as a result of proportional representation in parliamentary systems, where no single party has a clear majority. Through blockbildung, smaller parties can join together to form a larger group that has more influence and bargaining power in decision-making processes.
