What is innate immunity?

Innate immunity is the first line of defense against invading pathogens in our body. It is a non-specific defense mechanism that is present at birth and is always on active duty. Innate immunity includes physical barriers like the skin and mucous membranes that prevent the entry of harmful microorganisms, as well as cellular and chemical components that attack the invading pathogens. These cells are constantly scanning the body, recognizing and neutralizing foreign invaders quickly. The innate immune system is essential for preventing infections and diseases, even before the adaptive immune system comes into play.
