What is Article 16 of the Indian Constitution?

Article 16 of the Indian Constitution guarantees equality of opportunity in matters of public employment. It states that there shall be no discrimination against any citizen on the grounds of religion, race, caste, sex, descent, place of birth, or residence while making appointments to public office under the State. This means that all citizens, irrespective of their backgrounds, have an equal right to compete for and hold public offices and positions. Article 16 also emphasizes the importance of merit in appointments and provides for the reservation of posts for certain categories, such as Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and women, in order to address historic social and economic disadvantages.
