What is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis?

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and fatal lung disease that causes the gradual scarring of lung tissue. The cause of this condition is unknown and it tends to develop more frequently in individuals over age 60. IPF can cause difficulty breathing, a persistent dry cough, and fatigue. This condition is often diagnosed through a combination of medical imaging and pulmonary function testing. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for IPF, and treatment options focus on managing symptoms and slowing the disease's progression.
