What were the Albanians' early tribes and regions?
The Albanians have a rich history dating back to prehistoric times, when their ancestors were part of the Illyrian tribes. The Illyrians were spread across the Western Balkans, including modern-day Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro and parts of North Macedonia and Serbia. In the centuries that followed, the Albanians emerged as a distinct ethnic group and formed their own tribes and regions, such as the Ghegs in the north and the Tosks in the south. These tribes were united under Skanderbeg in the 15th century, but fell under Ottoman rule until Albania declared independence in 1912. Despite centuries of foreign influence, Albanian culture and identity has remained strong and is celebrated today.
