How do women managers unintentionally become obstacles for the career development of their female staff?
Women managers, despite their intentions to support and empower their female staff, can inadvertently become obstacles to their career development. One way this happens is through the perpetuation of gender stereotypes. Sometimes these managers subconsciously conform to societal norms about women's competence, leadership, and ambition. Consequently, they may unconsciously offer fewer opportunities for their female employees to take on challenging assignments, attend important meetings, or receive mentoring and sponsorship. Moreover, these managers may unintentionally discourage female staff from pursuing career advancement by questioning their abilities or expressing concerns regarding work-life balance, reinforcing the idea that a successful career is incompatible with being a woman. While unintentional, these actions perpetuate a cycle that impedes the progress of women in the workplace and hinders their professional growth.
