The Mata Atlantica, also known as the Atlantic Forest, is a highly biodiverse region located along the eastern coast of Brazil. Covering only around 10% of its original area, it is considered one of the world's most threatened and fragmented tropical forests. Despite its reduced size, the Mata Atlantica is still home to an incredible array of species, with estimates ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 plant species, many of which are endemic and found nowhere else on Earth. Additionally, it houses a vast diversity of animal species, including over 200 mammal species, 1,000 bird species, and 370 reptile species. The Mata Atlantica's biodiversity is a result of its complex topography and varied climate, supporting a wide range of ecosystems and unique habitats within its boundaries. Protecting and restoring this important region is crucial for the preservation of its rich biodiversity and ecological functioning.
