What is a gene?

A gene is a segment or sequence of DNA that encodes information to produce a specific protein or functional RNA molecule. Genes are responsible for transmitting inherited traits or characteristics from one generation to the next in living organisms, including humans. They dictate physical and biochemical traits, such as eye color, hair type, metabolic rate, susceptibility to diseases, and many other characteristics. Genes are organized into chromosomes that are located in the nucleus of cells and are responsible for controlling the activities of cells through the synthesis of proteins. The study of genes and their functions is known as genetics, which plays a crucial role in understanding the biology of living organisms.
