What is the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony?
A misdemeanor is considered a less serious crime than a felony. Misdemeanors usually carry a punishment of up to one year in jail and/or a fine. Examples of misdemeanors include disorderly conduct, petty theft, and simple assault. Felonies, on the other hand, are more serious crimes that result in a punishment of imprisonment of more than a year, and in some cases, life imprisonment or even the death penalty. Examples of felonies include murder, rape, and grand theft. Additionally, a felony conviction can have long-lasting consequences such as the loss of certain rights and difficulty obtaining employment.
