TRP (transient receptor potential) channels are a group of ion channels that play a crucial role in pain and thermal sensation. These channels are activated by various stimuli, such as heat, cold, and chemical irritants, leading to the generation and transmission of pain signals. Consequently, targeting TRP channels with specific agonists or antagonists may provide a potential therapeutic strategy for pain relief. For example, capsaicin, a natural TRPV1 agonist, has been used as a topical treatment for pain relief in arthritis and neuropathic pain. In contrast, some TRPV1 antagonists are being developed as potential candidates for treating chronic pain conditions. Moreover, recent studies have highlighted the potential of other TRP channels, including TRPV4 and TRPA1, as targets for developing novel pain therapeutics.
