What is foot and mouth disease?

Foot and mouth disease, also known as hoof-and-mouth disease, is a highly contagious viral disease that affects various cloven-hoofed animals such as cows, pigs, sheep, and goats. It is caused by a small RNA virus belonging to the family Picornaviridae. The disease spreads rapidly through close contact or exposure to contaminated objects and can cause fever, blisters in the mouth and on the hooves, and lameness. It is a significant concern for the livestock industry as infected animals can experience decreased milk production and weight loss, and it can lead to the culling of entire herds. It does not affect humans.
