How does deforestation contribute to climate change?
Deforestation contributes to climate change by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Trees absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and store it in their tissues. When forests are cut down, the carbon stored in them is released back into the atmosphere. Deforestation also reduces the ability of forests to absorb and store carbon dioxide in the future. Additionally, the removal of forests leads to changes in local and global climates, such as altered rainfall patterns and increased temperatures, which further contribute to climate change. Deforestation is responsible for around 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
