Peter the Great had several protégés during his reign as the Tsar of Russia. One of his most notable protégés was Menshikov, who was a childhood friend of Peter and went on to become one of the most powerful men in Russia. Another protégé of Peter's was Alexander Danilovich Menshikov, who was adopted by Peter as his godson and rose through the ranks to become a leading general and governor of Siberia. In addition to these individuals, Peter also had a close relationship with his own son, Aleksey, who he groomed to be his successor before his sudden death in 1725.
