Domain Controllers (DCs) are servers running Microsoft's Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS). The primary role of DCs is to authenticate and authorize users, computers, and other domain resources in a network environment. They also facilitate centralized management of network resources, enforce security policies, and provide services such as DNS and DHCP. DCs hold a large amount of critical information about the domain including user accounts, group policy settings, and security policies. As such, DCs are critical components of any Windows-based network.
