There are many different types of roots in plants. Fibrous roots are found in grasses and ferns and are made up of many small, branching roots. Taproots, like those found in carrots and dandelions, grow straight down and have smaller, branching roots growing from them. Adventitious roots are found in plants that need additional support, like ivy and corn. They grow from stems, branches, and even leaves, rather than from the plant's main root system. Prop roots, like those seen in banyan trees, grow down from the trunk of the tree to provide additional support. Finally, aerial roots, found in orchids and some types of vines, grow above ground and wrap around objects for support.
