What is FOMO and how does it affect Gen Z?

FOMO, or the Fear Of Missing Out, refers to the anxiety or unease that individuals experience when they believe they are missing out on exciting or interesting events or experiences happening elsewhere. It has become especially prevalent among the younger generation, known as Generation Z, due to their constant exposure to social media platforms. Gen Z's constant use of social media, where filtered and idealized images of others' lives are commonly shared, intensifies their FOMO. This fear or pressure to constantly be connected and up to date with what their peers are doing can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and even stress. It can also result in a compulsive need to constantly check social media, contributing to the loss of genuine connection and the cultivation of superficial relationships. Ultimately, FOMO can negatively impact the well-being and mental health of Gen Z, as they are constantly striving to keep up with an unattainable standard set by virtual representations of others' lives.
