John Wilkes Booth was an American actor who became infamous for assassinating President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865. Born into a prominent acting family, Booth became a successful performer in his own right but was also a staunch Confederate sympathizer. Following the Union's victory in the Civil War, Booth became increasingly radicalized and saw Lincoln as a tyrant who needed to be removed. He carried out the assassination at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., and fled into hiding but was eventually cornered and killed by federal soldiers. Booth's assassination of Lincoln made him one of the most reviled figures in American history.
