How does MPEG2 compression work?

MPEG2 compression works by taking advantage of both spatial and temporal redundancy in digital video. Spatial redundancy is reduced by using discrete cosine transform (DCT) to convert blocks of pixels into frequency domain coefficients, which are then quantized and encoded. Temporal redundancy is reduced by using predictive coding, where the difference between frames is encoded rather than storing each frame individually. Additionally, motion estimation and compensation techniques are used to further reduce data redundancy. MPEG2 compression allows for efficient storage and transmission of video while maintaining acceptable quality.
