What is the difference between kinetic and potential energy?

Kinetic energy is the energy an object possesses by virtue of its motion. The energy that is transferred to an object when a force acts upon it to cause displacement is what gives an object kinetic energy. On the other hand, potential energy is the energy an object possesses due to its position or state. It is the energy that is stored in an object when work is done on it, like lifting a weight against gravity. Kinetic energy is always associated with movement or motion, while potential energy is associated with an objects' position or state.
