Rukun Shalat refers to the essential actions that make up each of the five daily prayers in Islam. There are generally considered to be two types of Rukun Shalat: the pillars or essentials of prayer and the obligations of prayer. The pillars include the statement of intention (niyyah), standing (qiyam), recitation of Surah al-Fatiha, bowing (rukoo), prostration (sujood), and the final sitting (tashahud). The obligations include recitation of other Quranic verses, additional sitting, and saying salaam at the end of prayer. Therefore, there are six pillars or essentials and several obligations that make up the Rukun Shalat.
