Meiosis and polyploidization are linked in that polyploidization can arise as a result of the failure of normal meiosis. In normal meiosis, diploid cells divide into haploid cells, each containing one copy of each chromosome. However, sometimes meiosis can go awry, resulting in cells with more than one copy of each chromosome. When this occurs, the resulting cells are polyploid, containing more than two complete sets of chromosomes. While some polyploid cells are not viable and die off, others can continue to divide and develop into new organisms. Polyploidization is a common event in plants and can result in new species with novel traits and adaptations.
