What is the Line of Control between India and Pakistan?
The Line of Control (LoC) between India and Pakistan is a de facto border that separates the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir region from the Pakistani-administered Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan territories. It came into existence after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-48, when the UN-brokered ceasefire divided the disputed region. The LoC is approximately 740 kilometers long and is heavily militarized, with both countries deploying troops and artillery along its entirety. Despite various ceasefire agreements, sporadic skirmishes and violations occur along the LoC, adding to the tension between India and Pakistan. Efforts to resolve the long-standing Kashmir dispute have been ongoing but have yet to yield a comprehensive solution.
