What is dehumanization?

Dehumanization is the process by which individuals or groups are stripped of their humanity, and treated as if they are not fully human. This can occur on an individual level through acts of violence, discrimination, or social isolation, or on a larger societal scale through institutionalized racism, sexism, or other forms of oppression. Dehumanization has been used as a tool of political and social control, and has been implicated in some of the most extreme forms of violence and oppression throughout history. It is a phenomenon that continues to impact societies around the world today.
