Acute bacterial tonsillitis is primarily caused by the invasion of bacteria into the tonsils, resulting in inflammation and infection. The most common bacteria responsible for this condition is Streptococcus pyogenes, also known as group A Streptococcus. This bacterium is highly contagious and can be easily transmitted through respiratory droplets or direct contact with infected individuals. Other bacterial pathogens such as Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae can also cause acute bacterial tonsillitis, although less frequently. Factors that increase the risk of developing this condition include a weakened immune system, exposure to contaminated environments, close contact with infected individuals, and poor oral hygiene.
