What is the plot of The Matrix?

The plot of The Matrix follows a computer programmer named Neo, who discovers that the world he's been living in is actually a simulated reality created by sentient machines in order to keep human beings under control. After he is contacted by a group of rebels led by a man named Morpheus, Neo is offered the opportunity to escape the Matrix and join their fight against the machines. Along the way, he learns about his own destiny as "The One," a messianic figure who has the power to rewrite the rules of the Matrix and bring about the end of the war between man and machine.
