What is toxic masculinity?

Toxic masculinity refers to a set of societal expectations and behaviors associated with traditional male gender roles that can have harmful effects on men as well as those around them. It typically involves the suppression of emotions, dominance, aggression, and the devaluation of anything perceived as feminine. Toxic masculinity tends to promote a narrow and rigid view of masculinity, perpetuating harmful stereotypes and reinforcing harmful behaviors such as sexism, homophobia, and violence. It can create pressures for men to conform to certain ideals and norms, often resulting in negative consequences such as mental health issues, strained relationships, and the perpetuation of harmful gender dynamics. Challenging toxic masculinity involves embracing a more inclusive and fluid understanding of gender roles, encouraging emotional expression, promoting healthy relationships, and dismantling the harmful societal structures that perpetuate these norms.
