Why was the Treaty signed?

The Treaty was signed in 1921 as it was seen as the only viable solution to the conflict between Britain and Ireland. Both sides had been engaged in a violent struggle for independence, and the Treaty provided Ireland with a level of self-governance while still remaining part of the British Empire. The British believed that the Treaty would help to bring stability to the region and allow them to maintain some level of control over Ireland, while the Irish saw it as a step towards full independence. Despite some opposition from both sides, the Treaty was ultimately signed and led to the establishment of the Irish Free State.
