Congestion control is a mechanism used in computer networks to prevent congestion, or a situation where there is too much traffic trying to flow through a particular network segment at a given time. Congestion is the cause of network slowdowns, packet loss and network instability. Congestion control algorithms are therefore designed to regulate the flow of data within the network through rate limiting or other techniques, to avoid the congestion. The goal of congestion control is to enable the maximum utilization of network resources while maintaining network stability and performance.
