The Ajanta Caves were discovered by accident in 1819 when a group of British soldiers were out on a hunting expedition. One of the soldiers named John Smith noticed the entrance to one of the caves while tracking a tiger. The caves were hidden behind a dense forest and had been abandoned for centuries. The British authorities were quick to realize the archaeological significance of the Ajanta Caves, which contained elaborate paintings and sculptures dating back to the 2nd century BC. Today, the Ajanta Caves are a popular tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
