What is the origin of Albania?

Albania has a complex and diverse history with influences from various empires and cultures. The area now known as Albania was inhabited by Illyrian tribes prior to the arrival of Greek settlers in the 7th century BC. In the 3rd century BC, it was conquered by the Romans and later by the Byzantine Empire. Albania experienced periods of rule by Bulgarians, Serbs, and Venetians before falling under Ottoman rule in the 15th century. Albania gained independence in 1912, but experienced periods of communist rule and political turmoil throughout the 20th century. Today, it is a democracy and a member of the United Nations.
