How did Cambridge Analytica access data?

Cambridge Analytica accessed data through a third-party app called "This Is Your Digital Life," which was created by a researcher named Aleksandr Kogan. The app provided a personality quiz to Facebook users and collected not only their data, but also the data of their friends – unbeknownst to them – which resulted in the harvesting of data from up to 87 million users. Cambridge Analytica then used this data to create targeted advertising during the 2016 US Presidential Election and the Brexit campaign.
