Jean-Baptiste Lamarck was a French naturalist who presented a hypothesis about evolution in the early 19th century. Lamarck's theories proposed that organisms could change the size or shape of their body parts by using them more frequently (or not using them). These changes would then be passed down to their offspring. Lamarck also suggested that characteristics acquired during the lifetime of the individual (such as strength or knowledge) could be inherited by their offspring. Though his ideas were eventually proven to be incorrect, Lamarck's theories were influential in shaping the early scientific understanding of evolution.
