What is the structure of the respiratory system?

The respiratory system consists of various organs and structures that work together to facilitate the process of breathing. It begins with the nasal cavity, which filters, warms, and moisturizes the air as it enters the body. From there, air passes through the pharynx and then the larynx, which contains the vocal cords. The larynx leads to the trachea, or windpipe, which is reinforced by cartilage rings to keep it open. The trachea then branches into two bronchi, each leading to one of the lungs. Inside the lungs, the bronchi divide repeatedly into bronchioles, which eventually lead to clusters of tiny air sacs called alveoli. It is within these alveoli that the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs between the respiratory system and the bloodstream. The structure of the respiratory system is intricately designed to efficiently deliver oxygen to the body and remove waste gases.
