Esophageal cancer is a malignancy that affects the lining of the esophagus, the tube connecting the throat to the stomach. There are two main types of esophageal cancer: squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma. Squamous cell carcinoma typically originates in the squamous cells lining the upper and middle parts of the esophagus and is more common in people who smoke, consume excessive alcohol, or have a history of acid reflux. Adenocarcinoma commonly arises from the glandular cells in the lower part of the esophagus and is often associated with a condition called Barrett's esophagus, which is caused by long-term acid reflux. While these two types are the most prevalent, other rare forms such as small cell carcinoma, sarcoma, and lymphoma can also occur.
