George Leclerc de Buffon was a prominent 18th-century French naturalist and mathematician who is credited with numerous achievements. He was the first person to propose that the Earth was much older than previously thought, estimating its age to be around 75,000 years. Buffon's works also significantly contributed to the study of zoology, as he published several works on animal classification and anatomy, and also established the idea of species evolution. Furthermore, he was instrumental in creating the first comprehensive encyclopedia of natural history, Histoire Naturelle, which contained 36 volumes and covered a range of topics in biology, geology, physics, and astronomy.
